Blog Reflection - Practical 6

Activity 1 - Searching TP's Databases : Digital Library Portal

There were a total of 50 articles related to the topic, “Effects of Volcano Eruption”.

1.   Search for 1 resource (Article/etc) based on your research topic.
The title of the source is “How do Volcanoes affect human life? Integrated unit.”

2.   What can you say about the search results?
The result has a very neat introduction and description. This is the first time I am seeing a source that appears like this. It started off by introducing the Author(s) name, which is good, not only to credit those who contributed to the source, also to acknowledge their professionalism. Then, whether it has been reviewed by peers, most likely some feedbacks from people who are interested in that topic or of the same age. Third, the date of publication, whether it is a latest fact. Followed by descriptors which are somewhat similar to tags. Identifiers is like a case study which Mount Saint Helens has been chosen as a study base. Abstract is more of an introduction to the reader will expect and a brief explanation of what the different chapters talk about. Note is like an update the resource edition or other things that needs to inform the reader. Language of what the source is written in. Number of pages there are. The intended audience, like practitioners or teachers and publication type, like guides. Availability on getting the resource. Journal code for their own findings. The entry date to show currency. The accession number for their own use and lastly, database source.

3. Change the databases to any other discipline, e.g. “Design”, “Business” etc.
Other research databases… Global Issues in Context (GIC)

4.   Search for 1 resource related to your research topic.

5.   Briefly explain your search results. Are they similar to those found in (5).

Both resources are totally different. This source talks about the good effects of volcano whereby the scientist actually extract minerals from the volcano for a good cause. For instance, providing the magical elixir that is made from volcano minerals for hangover treatment, prevent getting drunk easily and avoid suffering from morning-after-feeling. Taking this source from “Global Issues”, I am able to achieve a different kind of perspective instead of hard facts and theory based resources. It is mostly on news there are pretty current. It is not similar to the resource that I have found previously.

Activity 2 – Searching the Invisible Web -TP’s Databases : ITPRO

7.   Can you find any resource relevant to your research topic from ITPRO? Why?
Unfortunately, I did not find any source that is related to my topic. ITPRO provides sources that are more catered to the Engineering and IT topics. Not a very helpful resource. However, I tried to search for some resources that are somewhat have a little link to my topic. Some of the resources that I have found are, “Health, Safety and Environment Legislation: A Pocket Guide” and “Climate Change, A Natural Hazard”. I read through the contents, which does not relate that much to my topic, but somehow the idea is there.

Activity 4 (Blog [and Twitter]Reflections)
Briefly reflect on lessons learnt from this practical:

a.    Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?
I think it is more effective to search the invisible web than using search engines, meta-search and subject directories as the invisible web provides more information which the public cannot access. This means that the public do not have the sources, which is something good as I will be able to show or get information where others do not get it. It benefits me and my work will be more interesting as compared to others.

b.    Will you use the invisible web (databases) for research in your own respective Diplomas? Why?
Most probably will if I cannot find any information with the basic search facility which I usually do. As invisible web requires access to get information, I do not usually remember that there is this search facility for me as it is quite a hassle to login and use it. Personally, I like to search things quickly, so the procedure of going school’s website, then the need to log in as a student, then going to the library page, login again, then to the research databases and the need to login again is really time consuming and troublesome. Therefore, I will only use it when there is really a need to.

c.    What have you learnt from your wiki experience during this practical?
I have learnt new things about my topic. This practical taught me that some of the research databases may not be suitable for what I study. Not everything is possible to provide me the information that I need, therefore, I must learn to be able to differentiate what is the right source and what is not.

d.   Comment on at least one of your classmate’s blog post.
I will comment on Yun Xi’s blog then. Do visit her blog by clicking on the link at the top right corner of my blog.
