Blog Reflection - Practical 7 (Activity 1)

Activity 1 – Individual & Group

  1. Read the article “Citizen Journalism” http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/ELI7031.pdf

  1. Visit the website http://www.stomp.com.sg/

  1. Based on what you read in the article in (1) and using the criteria for evaluating websites, comment and justify whether you think Citizen Journalism is effective in Singapore’s context.

Personally, I feel that Citizen Journalism is ineffective in Singapore. It may become another “Stomp” website where everyone will just throw in their comments, post all the insignificant stuffs, the gossip news, ugliness of Singapore, etc. The Citizen Journalism will somehow be abused by users of Singapore. I believe that we are not up to the standard of being able to comment on something not being subjective, skeptical, bias, etc. To justify it, look at Stomp website.

  1. If you were to create your own version of “Stomp” in relation to your research topic (eg ethics on cloning, genetically modified foodetc) :
How would you apply Citizen Journalism differently?

Since as mentioned, to apply Citizen Journalism “Differently”, I might just start off with an argument of my topic. For instance, my actual topic is, “discuss the effects of volcano eruption on society”, I might phrase my question or title as, “Volcano eruption does not concern me at all…”. It is quite a personal kind of title, but this evokes people to react whether positively or negatively, at least I do get interesting replies and comments. People who do read up on the effects might want to showcase how much they know and enlighten us with their research or sources. People who do not know their work would give layman’s comments like maybe, “it may not concern you, but volcano eruption actually killed and destroyed many living things on earth, you should feel some sympathy for them, you should count your blessing”. Seriously, I think setting up that kind of heading will attract different kinds of response. Instead of making things so serious, Citizen Journalism can be something that is wild and crazy.

What topics/services will you include to ensure that your “Stomp” effectively address the implications for teaching and learning of Citizen Journalism mentioned in the article.

Apart from a topic discussion that is open to all sorts of answers, I would like to have links to useful and reliable resources so that people can link to it and understand better or check whether they are wrong in what they said in the past. Other than that, I would like to have services like a disclaimer page, so people do not criticize me and become so personal.

  1. Share your collective views via our subject Wiki – EIR-Rawkz.

Activity 1 (Blog Reflections)

Briefly reflect on lessons learnt from this practical:

a.    Which criteria did you use to evaluate Stomp.com? Why did you choose this criteria? What lessons have you learnt from this activity?

There are a total of 9 criterias which I remembered during lesson. They are, purpose, coverage, authority, accuracy, currency, presentation and arrangement, accessibility, usability and overall quality. What I have chosen was presentation and arrangement. I chose this criteria was because Stomp.com really has a lot of colours, layouts of videos, news, etc. The way Stomp.com layouts the pages are neat and clear but difficult to define the cut lines. This is something interesting for an entertainment, news kind of website. From this lesson, I learnt that drawings do not work if people are separated.

b.    How do you feel about sharing your views via Wiki?

I feel that by sharing in Wiki, I was able to contribute to the Wiki and help out my classmates who are also doing the same topic as me. I like to give and provide information which other people do not have.
